All about Mothers' Union

What is Mothers' Union?

It is a world-wide Anglican organisation whose purpose it is to be concerned with all aspects of Christian family life

Why was Mothers' Union founded?

Mothers' Union was founded in 1876 by Mary Sumner, an Englishwoman. When her first child was born she was overwhelmed by what she saw as the awesome responsibility of parents, not only caring for their children's physical well-being, but also for their spiritual nurture and growth.

What is the Aim of Mothers' Union?

The Aim is the advancement of the Christian religion in the sphere of marriage and family life. In order to carry this out there are five objects.

Mothers' Union is a Christian organisation which promotes the well-being of families world-wide. We achieve this by:

Developing prayer and spiritual growth in families
Studying and reflecting on family life and marriage and their place in society
Resourcing our members to take practical action to improve conditions for families, both nationally and in the communities in which they live.

What are the Objects of Mothers' Union?

To UPHOLD Christ's teaching on the nature of marriage.
To ENCOURAGE parents to bring up their children in the faith and life of the church.
To MAINTAIN a world-wide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship and service.
To PROMOTE conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
To HELP those whose family life has met with adversity.

As a voluntary organisation Mothers' Union offers friendship, care and unconditional love to thousands of women and men throughout the world, a lifeline for many families. It is a praying, teaching and caring society.

Membership is open to both men and women who have been baptised in the name of the Trinity and who support the Aims and Objects.
